Swimmer Found Dead After Going Missing Off Madeira Beach: Pinellas County Sheriff

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – A 31-year-old man, identified as Hector Colon, was found dead on the shore near 14900 Gulf Boulevard early Tuesday morning, July 23, 2024, after being reported missing in the waters off Madeira Beach the evening before.

Deputies responded to a call at approximately 6:12 p.m. on Monday, reporting a swimmer in distress. Colon was swimming with his roommate, Angel Nunez, when strong currents separated them. Nunez managed to swim to safety and alerted authorities.

A search for Colon was launched immediately, involving the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, Flight Unit, Dive Team, and assistance from the Coast Guard and local fire departments. The search continued late into the night but was unsuccessful.

Tragically, Colon’s body was found the following morning. The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed his identity and notified next of kin.

The incident is not considered suspicious at this time. Authorities are urging swimmers to be cautious of strong currents and changing conditions while enjoying the beach.
