A speeding SUV on wet roadways rashed into a Florida Highway Patrol car during a traffic stop on Sunday.

On January 1, 2023, at 11:10 AM, a FHP Trooper in a marked patrol car conducted a traffic of a car traveling southbound on SR-589 (Veterans Expressway) at the 12.5 Milepost for speeding. 

Both the trooper and the speeding car stopped along the outside shoulder of the highway. 

As both vehicles pulled to the shoulder and stopped, an was traveling too fast for the wet roadway conditions southbound on SR-589 and lost control.

Investigators say the SUV entered the outside shoulder and collided with the rear of a Florida Highway Patrol cruiser.  The impact propelled the patrol car forward, resulting in a collision with the car that was stopped for speeding. 

All three vehicles came to rest along the outside shoulder of the highway. 

The trooper suffered minor injuries in the crash. Investigators say the driver of the SUV, a 52-year-old New Port Richey man, and the driver of the stopped car, a 59-year-old Land O’ Lakes man and his passenger, also suffered minor injuries.
