In a significant decision, the Supreme Court on Friday upheld a federal law that prohibits individuals under domestic violence restraining orders from possessing firearms.
This ruling marks a reversal of a previous decision from the federal appeals court in New Orleans.
The 8-1 decision, with Justice Clarence Thomas dissenting, reaffirms the 1994 ban on firearms for those subject to restraining orders intended to protect their spouses or partners.

This ruling came just a week after the court overturned a ban on bump stocks, a decision that expanded gun rights.
The case originated from the Supreme Court’s 2022 Bruen decision, which expanded gun rights. Zackey Rahimi, a Texas man, was accused of domestic violence and subsequently challenged the federal law banning firearm possession for individuals under restraining orders.
The court’s decision emphasizes the importance of protecting domestic violence victims and highlights the ongoing debate surrounding gun control measures in the United States.
While the recent ruling on bump stocks expanded gun rights, this latest decision demonstrates a commitment to maintaining restrictions on firearm access for those who pose a threat to others.
