“Super Spreaders” 3 Texas Democrats Get COVID After Defying CDC Rules

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an Order on January 29, 2021, requiring the wearing of masks by travelers to prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.

Conveyance operators must also require that all persons wear masks when boarding, disembarking, and for the duration of travel.

The Order defines “conveyance” as including “aircraft, train, road vehicle (including rideshares), vessel…or other means of transport, including military transport.”

The CDC Order exempts the following categories of persons:

  • A child under the age of 2 years;
  • A person with a disability who cannot wear a mask, or cannot safely wear a mask, because of the disability as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (42 U.S.C. § 12101 et seq.); and
  • A person for whom wearing a mask would create a risk to workplace health, safety, or job duty as determined by the relevant workplace safety guidelines or federal regulations.

Three of the nearly 60 Texas House Democrats tested positive for the virus while staying in Washington, D.C., according to Texas House Democratic Caucus leadership.

One of the three members found out about their positive test result late Friday evening, but doesn’t have symptoms, caucus officials said.

Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas said Democrats who left the state to stop the passage of voting legislation will be arrested upon their return, during an interview with Laura Ingraham last week.

Two additional members tested positive in a rapid test Saturday morning, including state Rep. Celia Israel of Austin.

“This is a sober reminder that Covid is still with us, and though vaccinations offer tremendous protection, we still must take necessary precautions,” the caucus’s chairman, Chris Turner, said in the statement.

“The State House of Representatives who are here in the capitol … they do have the ability to issue a call to have fellow members who are not showing up to be arrested, but only so long as the arrest is made in the state of Texas. That’s why they have fled the state,” Abbott told Ingraham.

This is the second time Democratic lawmakers have prevented the passage of voting restrictions in Texas, after previously preventing quorum in May. As opposed to the current legislation, the previous bill included provisions that restricted Sunday voting hours and made it easier to overturn an election due to voter fraud.

Abbott said he would continue to call special sessions “all the way up until election next year.”
