TAMPA, Fla. – A Leto High School student was arrested Monday morning after being found in possession of a loaded handgun on school grounds.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) reports that a School Resource Deputy responded to a Centegix alert issued by a school administrator who noticed a suspicious bulge on the student, identified as 16-year-old Alonzo Bridges.

An administrative search revealed that Bridges was carrying a loaded handgun with 15 rounds in the magazine and one round in the chamber. Bridges refused to disclose how he obtained the firearm.

“I can’t stress this enough: bringing a gun to school is not only dangerous, it’s unacceptable,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “One bad decision could have changed lives forever today. Thankfully, the school staff and our deputy acted quickly to stop a potential tragedy. This reckless behavior will not be tolerated, and we will ensure that anyone who endangers our schools is held accountable.”
