Stephen A. Smith Says Dems So Focused On Opposing Trump They’re Dooming Themselves

ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Wednesday that the Democrats’ apparent obsession with opposing President Donald Trump could cost them future elections.

Smith’s critique follows Democrats posting videos of themselves spewing identical anti-Trump rhetoric before the president’s Mar. 4 joint address to congress and facing backlash for their behavior during the speech.

After Hannity condemned the Democrats’ conduct during the speech, Smith warned on “Hannity” that the party’s seemingly misplaced priorities would not win them the 2026 midterms or reclaim the presidency in 2028.

“Here’s the problem — one of the problems, one of the many problems with the Democratic Party, outside of not being known as the party that caters to the working class, outside of being known as the party that leaned so far left you made Trump seem normal,” Smith said. “Outside of all of those things, here’s the ultimate crime that’s going on: They’re literally sitting up on Capitol Hill, not all but most of them … acting like their only job is to be an opposite of Donald Trump in every way, shape, form and fashion.”

“That’s not going to get them the midterms. That’s not going to help them regain the White House. It’s fool’s gold. And somebody needs to tell ’em. I’m trying to tell ’em. I don’t think I’m alone,” he continued. “But when the conservatives like yourself and various others are uttering this stuff, it pains me to say, ‘You’re right.’ And they better do something about it … And Lord help them if the tariffs situation works in Trump’s favor. They’re really not going to have a leg to stand on then.”

Smith also asserted in February that Democrats presently lack a strong leader just after ending his interview with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

“I’m not denigrating Leader Jeffries in any way, but when you think about a national voice for the party, who is that person?” he asked. “It’s nonexistent right now.”

The Democratic Party’s disapproval rating also reached 57%, while its approval rating fell close to a record low of 31% among registered voters, according to Quinnipiac University polling released on Jan. 29. Meanwhile, Republicans held a 43% favorable rating and a 45% unfavorable rating.
