A House panel approved a proposal Thursday aimed at smoothing the way for the potential construction of a presidential library in Florida, a move widely viewed as beneficial for preserving presidential history and attracting tourism.
The House Intergovernmental Affairs Subcommittee voted 13-2 in favor of HB 69, a bill that would bar local governments from enacting ordinances or regulations that prohibit or restrict the construction of presidential libraries.

Although the bill does not specify a president, many see it as laying the groundwork for a library honoring President Donald Trump, a Palm Beach resident.
“The reasoning behind it is to make sure that the planning, design, and construction process for a presidential library here in the state is as smooth as possible,” said bill sponsor Representative Alex Andrade (R-Pensacola).

The measure received broad bipartisan support in the subcommittee, with dissenting votes coming from Representative Ashley Gantt (D-Miami) and Representative Rita Harris (D-Orlando).
A companion Senate version of the bill (SB 118), sponsored by Senator Jason Brodeur (R-Sanford), has also advanced in committee.
