With spring break just around the corner, the U.S. State Department is urging American travelers to prioritize safety and preparedness as they plan international getaways. In a media note released today, the department emphasized its commitment to protecting U.S. citizens abroad, offering a slew of practical tips to ensure a secure and enjoyable holiday season.

“The U.S. State Department has no higher priority than the safety of Americans abroad,” the statement began, highlighting the agency’s role in assisting citizens during emergencies like medical crises, arrests, or natural disasters. As college students and families gear up for spring break travel, the department outlined key advice under two main pillars: “Be Informed” and “Be Prepared.”

Travelers are encouraged to research their destinations thoroughly before departure. “Know Before You Go,” the department advises, pointing to state.gov/destination for country-specific information on laws and customs. Some nations impose strict regulations on drugs, weapons, and even social media activity, and unintentional violations can lead to severe penalties. “Violating these laws, even unintentionally, can result in serious consequences,” the note warned.

The State Department also underscored the importance of heeding travel advisories. Areas flagged with a Level 4 “Do Not Travel” warning—due to risks like crime, political unrest, or kidnapping—are off-limits for spring break plans. “No one should travel to Level 4 areas for spring break or any other reason,” the department stressed, urging travelers to check advisories before booking.

Scams, too, are a global concern, with a particular caution against using dating apps abroad. Criminals have been known to exploit these platforms to lure unsuspecting travelers into dangerous situations, including robbery or physical harm. For those caught in trouble, the department reminded citizens they can reach out to the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for help.

Preparation is equally critical, starting with passport validity. Many countries require passports to have at least six months remaining before expiration, and travelers needing renewals can visit state.gov/passport for guidance. The department also advised saving contact details for the closest U.S. embassy or consulate, accessible at usembassy.gov, where 24/7 emergency services are available for incidents like lost passports or serious injuries.

For added peace of mind, the State Department promoted its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service that delivers real-time travel alerts and safety updates via email. Enrolling at state.gov also enables the department to locate and assist citizens during emergencies abroad.

The release comes as the State Department continues to support Americans worldwide through its network of embassies and consulates, though today’s statement offered no updates on the official list of diplomatic posts, which remains a standard reference on usembassy.gov. Instead, the focus was squarely on empowering travelers with resources to navigate potential risks.

As spring break approaches, the message is clear: a little foresight can go a long way. “To ensure U.S. citizens have a safe and enjoyable spring break, we offer these resources to help travelers stay informed, prepared, and aware,” the department concluded. With these tools in hand, Americans heading overseas can look forward to a holiday season that’s memorable for all the right reasons.
