BRADENTON, Fla. – Florida, a state known for its sunshine and beaches, is also grappling with a serious issue: drug addiction. The opioid crisis has hit the state hard, with overdose deaths on the rise. However, there’s a growing network of drug treatment centers across Florida, offering hope and recovery to those struggling with addiction.

These centers provide a range of services, from detoxification and inpatient rehabilitation to outpatient counseling and medication-assisted treatment. They cater to individuals battling various addictions, including opioids, alcohol, and other substances.

One key trend in Florida’s drug treatment landscape is the focus on holistic approaches. Many centers now offer services like yoga, meditation, and art therapy alongside traditional counseling and medical care.

This recognizes the importance of addressing the mental and emotional aspects of addiction, not just physical dependence.

The Tampa Free Press spoke with Eileen Burchby, M.D. FASAM, Medical Director at Starting Pointe Recovery, located in Bradenton.

“At Starting Pointe Recovery, we are working to add modalities such as yoga, meditation, and other recovery supports to our services. Evidence shows that anything that helps build an individual’s recovery capital (the internal and external supports that help an individual maintain recovery) leads to improvement in sustained recovery,” said Burchby.

Another trend is the increasing use of medication-assisted treatment (MAT). This approach combines behavioral therapy with medications like methadone, buprenorphine, or naltrexone to help individuals manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings. MAT has proven effective in reducing relapse rates and improving long-term recovery outcomes.

“Starting Pointe Recovery offers full spectrum MAT options individualized to assist in helping patients enter into and sustain long-term recovery from life-threatening substances,” said Burchby. “This has become a part of the globally recognized standard of care for substance abuse treatment.”

However, access to quality drug treatment remains a challenge for many Floridians. The cost of treatment can be prohibitive, and insurance coverage often falls short. Additionally, there’s a stigma associated with addiction that prevents many people from seeking help.

“By continuing to grow the conversation regarding Addiction as a chronic relapsing disease rather than a social or moral failing, we work toward decreasing stigma and encourage those affected to seek care,” said Burchby.

Despite these challenges, Florida’s drug treatment centers are making a difference in the lives of countless individuals and families. By offering evidence-based treatment and compassionate care, they are helping people break free from the cycle of addiction and rebuild their lives.

For those seeking help or information about drug treatment in Florida, resources are available through the Florida Department of Children and Families and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

As the opioid crisis continues to affect communities across the state, Florida’s drug treatment centers play a crucial role in providing hope and healing. With continued investment in treatment and prevention, the state can make strides in combating this devastating epidemic.
