ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The City of St. Petersburg is launching a major green initiative, the Community Canopy Initiative, with the goal of planting 1,000 trees across the city within the next year. To kick off this ambitious project, the city is hosting a free tree giveaway on Saturday, April 19th.
In celebration of Earth Month, and in the lead-up to Earth Day (April 22nd) and Arbor Day (April 25th), 500 trees will be distributed to residents at two locations. This hands-on event provides an opportunity for St. Pete residents to actively contribute to a more sustainable and beautiful city.
Community Canopy Tree Giveaway:
- Date: Saturday, April 19th
- Time: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
- Locations:
- Walter Fuller Recreation Center, 7901 30th Ave. N
- Frank Pierce Recreation Center, 2000 7th St. S
Important Information for Residents:
- The event is open to all St. Petersburg residents.
- One tree will be provided per household, on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Trees must be planted on private property, not in public right-of-ways.
- Residents are encouraged to bring buckets and containers to collect free organic soil and mulch.
- Information on various tree species will be available, allowing residents to choose the best fit for their property, based on availability.
- Four tree varieties will be available, South Florida Slash Pine, Sand Live Oak, Sweetgum, and Sugarberry.

This tree giveaway offers residents a chance to directly participate in creating a greener St. Petersburg, while also enjoying the numerous benefits of having trees in their yards. The city encourages all eligible residents to take part in this exciting initiative.
