ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.
– A 25-year-old St. Petersburg man is in serious condition after a high-speed crash on Interstate 275 near the Skyway Bridge this afternoon.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was driving a Tesla sedan southbound on I-275 at excessive speeds when he lost control of the vehicle around the 16-mile marker. The car veered off the roadway, struck a drainage pond, and overturned into the mangroves, ejecting the driver, who was not wearing a seatbelt, into the Gulf of Mexico.

A passing boater rescued the injured driver from the water and transported him to the Maximo Park boat ramp, where he was then taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.

The incident caused significant delays on I-275 as authorities investigated the crash scene. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
