ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – After five decades of unwavering dedication and service to the community, Fire Chief James Large of St. Petersburg Fire Rescue has officially retired today, being recognized by his family and friends.

Chief Large began his career as a young firefighter in St. Petersburg Fire Rescue in 1974. He has since risen through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership, commitment, and valor throughout his tenure. His exemplary service has left an indelible mark on the department and the St.Petersburg community.

Under Chief Large’s steadfast guidance, St. Petersburg Fire Rescue has become one of the country’s most respected and efficient fire departments. As Chief Large transitions into retirement, he leaves a legacy of professionalism, compassion, and service. His impact on St. Petersburg Fire Rescue and the community it serves will be felt for generations to come.

Today, a retirement celebration honoring Chief Large’s 50 years of service was held at the St. Petersburg Fire Rescue Headquarters. Family, friends, fellow city firefighters and colleagues, and representatives from fire departments all over the state made the long trip to give personal thanks to Chief Large.
