St. Petersburg Bicyclist Dies After Collision with Car

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- A fatal accident involving a bicyclist and a car occurred shortly after 7:00 am this morning at the intersection of 16th Street North and 5th Avenue North.

The investigation reveals that an eastbound red Dodge Journey, attempting a left turn south onto 16th Street North, collided with an 83-year-old bicyclist, Juan Yhanes, who was crossing the street from east to west in a marked crosswalk.

Mr. Yhanes, a St. Petersburg resident, had the right of way. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

“We are deeply saddened to learn of this morning’s fatality,” said a spokesperson for the St. Petersburg Police Department. “Our condolences go out to Mr. Yhanes’ family and loved ones.”

Mr. Yhanes was transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Next of kin have been notified.

The driver of the Dodge Journey remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
