Spring Hill Man’s “Close Encounter” With Deputy Leads To DUI, Drugs, And Firearm Charges

HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A Spring Hill man’s close following habits landed him in jail after a traffic stop revealed a plethora of charges, including DUI, drug possession, and firearm violations.

Early Thursday morning, around 2:44 a.m., a Hernando County Sheriff’s deputy observed a vehicle tailgating another car on Commercial Way. Deputy M. McNeeley conducted a traffic stop and quickly detected the smell of alcohol coming from the driver, 36-year-old Anthony Smith.

After conducting field sobriety tests, Deputy McNeeley arrested Smith for Driving Under the Influence. A search of Smith, who is a convicted felon, revealed a loaded firearm. Deputies also discovered over 500 grams of marijuana in Smith’s vehicle.

At the Hernando County Detention Center, Smith’s blood alcohol level tested at .140%, nearly twice the legal limit. He also refused to sign his DUI citation.

Smith now faces a long list of charges:

  • Driving Under the Influence
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon
  • Possession of Ammunition by a Convicted Felon
  • Using a Firearm while Under the Influence
  • Possession of Marijuana
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
  • Refusal to Sign Citation

Smith’s bond is currently set at $5,250.
