TAMPA, Fla.- Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister announced today that Sergeant Janak Amin, a 21-year veteran with HCSO, was fired from the Sheriff’s office and arrested today, booked on a felony 3 charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
Sergeant Amin was holding his service gun inches from the head of an unarmed Black male suspect, who was on the ground in a prone position — and threatening to “shoot him in his head” if he refused to identify himself.
The situation was defused by another deputy and on-site supervisor who were able to identify the suspect with prior knowledge and rapid ID technology.
Sheriff Chronister said Amin had “No reason, no rationale, no justification” to point a gun at the victim.
Address information and mugshot for Amin were not made available on the HCSO Jail website as of tonight.
