Budget airline giant Spirit Airlines announced Monday it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The move comes after years of financial struggles exacerbated by the pandemic and a failed merger attempt with JetBlue.

Despite losing over $2.5 billion since 2020 and facing significant debt obligations, Spirit assures customers that operations will continue as normal during the restructuring process. Bookings and flights will remain uninterrupted.

“Spirit has entered into an agreement with our bondholders that is expected to reduce our total debt, provide increased financial flexibility, position Spirit for long-term success, and accelerate investments, providing guests with enhanced travel experiences and greater value,” said Ted Christie, President & CEO, Spirit Airlines. “Part of this financial restructuring includes filing a “prearranged” chapter 11.”

Several factors contributed to Spirit’s financial woes:

  • Pandemic Impact: The sharp decline in air travel during the pandemic dealt a significant blow to the airline industry.
  • Rising Costs: Increased labor and operational expenses squeezed profit margins.
  • Competition: Other airlines adopted budget-friendly fares, putting pressure on Spirit’s core market.
  • Engine Issues: Required repairs to Pratt & Whitney engines led to grounded planes and pilot furloughs.

Spirit attempted to navigate these challenges by introducing bundled fares and adjusting its flight schedule. However, these efforts were not enough to overcome the financial hurdles.

The bankruptcy filing allows Spirit to reorganize its finances and negotiate with creditors. The airline remains optimistic about its future and its ability to continue serving customers as a major player in the budget travel sector.
