For seafood enthusiasts and divers, it’s time to wrap up the lobster gear. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has announced that the recreational and commercial spiny lobster seasons will close on April 1st, 2025, in both state and federal waters.
This annual closure is a crucial part of the FWC’s conservation efforts, allowing the spiny lobster population to replenish. The popular crustaceans will be off-limits to harvesting until the season reopens on August 6th, 2025.

However, lobster lovers can still look forward to the highly anticipated two-day recreational sport season, often referred to as “mini-season.” This year, the mini-season is scheduled for Wednesday, July 30th, and Thursday, July 31st. This brief window provides recreational divers and snorkelers with a chance to catch their own spiny lobsters before the official season begins.
Key points to remember:
- Season Closure:
- The regular spiny lobster season closes April 1st, 2025.
- It reopens August 6th, 2025.
- Mini-Season:
- The two-day recreational sport season is July 30th and 31st, 2025.
The FWC reminds all participants to adhere to regulations during the mini-season and the regular season when it reopens. This includes size and bag limits, as well as prohibited harvesting areas. It is also important to have the appropriate licenses and permits. Responsible harvesting helps to ensure that Florida’s spiny lobster population remains healthy for future generations.
