Special Counsel Jack Smith, who has been at the forefront of high-profile investigations into former President Donald Trump, is expected to step down from his role, sources close to the Department of Justice (DOJ) confirmed late Tuesday.
Jack Smith was appointed as special counsel in November 2022 by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee the DOJ’s investigations into Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents, as well as his role in the events surrounding January 6th. The decision to appoint Smith came amid rising political tensions and calls for an independent probe, given the unprecedented nature of investigating a former president.

However, Smith’s tenure has been anything but smooth. His aggressive prosecutorial tactics and wide-reaching subpoenas have sparked intense criticism from Trump supporters, conservative lawmakers, and legal analysts who have questioned the impartiality of the investigations.
The decision to step down follows increasing pressure from several quarters, including Republican members of Congress who have accused Smith of bias and of conducting a politically motivated investigation.
President-elect Donald Trump’s recent electoral victory has also intensified scrutiny on the Special Counsel’s office, with many of Trump’s allies calling for an end to what they describe as a “weaponization of the justice system.”
With Smith stepping down, it remains unclear who, if anyone, will take over his caseload. The Department of Justice has not yet made a formal announcement, but insiders suggest that Attorney General Merrick Garland could appoint a new special counsel or reassign the cases internally.
In a brief statement, Smith’s spokesperson did not confirm the resignation but hinted at a forthcoming announcement: “Special Counsel Smith remains dedicated to upholding the rule of law and has no further comment at this time.”
