Monica Svobodny, 52, will spend two years in federal prison for stealing over $1 million from her employer to fund a lavish lifestyle.

Svobodny, a former Supply Chain and Engineering Manager at a furniture manufacturing company in Edina, Minnesota, abused her position to embezzle funds over a seven-year period. She used company credit cards for unauthorized personal expenses, including designer clothing, spa treatments, and luxury hotel stays.

To conceal her fraudulent activity, Svobodny employed various tactics, such as leaving unapproved expenses “pending” in the accounting system and manipulating PayPal transaction receipts. She also fraudulently listed some expenses as payments to a defunct company.

Svobodny’s scheme unraveled, and she was subsequently charged with wire fraud. After pleading guilty in April 2024, she was sentenced to 24 months in prison, two years of supervised release, and ordered to pay full restitution of $1,137,404.

This case was investigated by the Edina Police Department and the FBI. It serves as a reminder that white-collar crime carries serious consequences, and those who abuse their positions of trust for personal gain will be held accountable.
