U.S. Senator John Thune (R-S.D.) delivered a poignant speech on the Senate floor today, addressing the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania and calling for a national embrace of unity and shared values. Thune also emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms and accountability within the Secret Service following the incident.
“Mr. President, the attempted assassination of President Trump 11 days ago at a peaceful rally in Pennsylvania shook the nation,” Thune began. “And I am very thankful that he was not seriously harmed.”

He expressed his gratitude to the law enforcement personnel who acted swiftly to protect the former president when the shooting started. Thune highlighted the tragic loss of life and injuries that occurred, acknowledging the bravery of Corey Comperatore, a volunteer firefighter who died protecting his family, and others who rendered aid during the crisis.
“There was not just one but a number of apparent security breakdowns, notably a failure to secure the roof before the rally,” Thune noted, pointing to multiple investigations underway to identify and address the security lapses.
Thune affirmed that the resignation of the Secret Service director was an appropriate response but stressed that more work is needed. He called for a thorough review and reform of the Secret Service, citing ongoing issues with staffing and previous security failures.

“It’s time to fix these problems once and for all and ensure that the Secret Service is fully prepared to fulfill its mission,” Thune stated. He advocated for a new Secret Service director dedicated to prioritizing agency reforms.
Reflecting on the broader implications of the July 13 incident, Thune urged Americans to embody the best of humanity in times of crisis. He quoted President Trump’s call for unity and true American character, urging the nation to remember the common goals that unite them despite political differences.
“My thoughts and prayers continue to be with those injured on July 13, and with the families of the injured and deceased,” Thune concluded. “And I pray that the events in Butler, Pennsylvania, will never be repeated.”
