A South Carolina man, Onis Washington, 25, was sentenced to 180 months (15 years) in federal prison on Wednesday, June 28th, 2024, for carjacking. The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.

Washington was found guilty of forcefully stealing a car from a victim on Carondelet Street in New Orleans on January 2nd, 2022. He and an unidentified co-defendant accosted the victim and fled the scene in the stolen vehicle.

Following a thorough investigation, detectives identified Washington and located the abandoned car approximately a mile from the second attempted traffic stop where he rammed a deputy. While the car’s owner has been identified, Washington’s co-defendant remains at large.
