A South African national and suspected terrorist has been arrested in Brooklyn following a multi-agency effort.

According to authorities, the individual had previously been released into the country by Border Patrol after illegally entering through Texas. The man was initially detained in Texas for criminal trespassing.

Based on the information available at the time of the initial detention, he was subsequently released. However, a later investigation uncovered a positive match on the terrorist watchlist.

This discovery prompted immediate action by U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) agents and personnel at the National Targeting Center.

Key questions being raised include:

  • Why was the individual released by Border Patrol despite ultimately being flagged on a terror watch list?
  • What specific vetting procedures were followed during the initial detention, and where did the system fail?
  • What is the individual’s alleged connection to terrorism?
  • What measures are being implemented to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, ensuring better information sharing between agencies?

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is expected to address the situation later today.
