HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. – A small, single-engine plane carrying two occupants crashed on Pine Island Drive in Hernando County, Florida on Friday afternoon.

According to Hernando County Fire Rescue, the plane experienced engine failure and attempted an emergency landing on the roadway.

During the landing attempt, the aircraft struck a palm tree, nearly splitting the plane in half. Fortunately, both occupants were able to exit the wreckage with only minor injuries.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene quickly, and both occupants were treated for their injuries. Fire rescue and hazmat crews also responded to contain a 30-gallon fuel spill caused by the crash.

The incident is currently under investigation, and the cause of the engine failure is yet to be determined. Local authorities have not released the names of the individuals involved.

The crash caused temporary traffic disruptions on Pine Island Drive, but the road has since been reopened.
