Shelley Duvall, the iconic actress known for her memorable roles in films like “The Shining” and “Nashville,” passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Blanco, Texas on Thursday. She was 75 years old.

Duvall’s longtime partner, Dan Gilroy, confirmed her passing, stating, “My dear, sweet, wonderful life, partner, and friend left us last night. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free.” The cause of death was reported as complications from diabetes.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Duvall began her career in the 1970s, quickly becoming a muse for director Robert Altman, appearing in several of his films, including “Brewster McCloud,” “McCabe & Mrs. Miller,” and “Thieves Like Us.” Her most notable role with Altman came in the critically acclaimed “Nashville,” where she played the aspiring country singer L.A. In 1980, Duvall took on the role of Wendy Torrance in Stanley Kubrick’s psychological horror film “The Shining,” opposite Jack Nicholson. Her portrayal of the terrified and tormented wife is considered one of the most iconic performances in horror cinema history.

Throughout her career, Duvall was known for her distinctive wide-eyed look and her ability to convey both vulnerability and strength. She starred in numerous other films, including “Popeye,” “Time Bandits,” and “Roxanne.”

Duvall largely retreated from the public eye in the 1990s, returning to Texas and living a quiet life. However, her impact on cinema remains undeniable, and her work continues to be celebrated by fans and critics alike.

Her friend and publicist, Gary Springer, remembered her as a “dear, sweet, wonderful life, partner, and friend.” Gilroy added, “Fly away beautiful Shelley.”

Shelley Duvall leaves behind a legacy of unforgettable performances that will continue to captivate audiences for years to come.
