‘Shellebrate’ Gopher Tortoise Day In Florida: April 10th Marks Statewide Celebration

Floridians are gearing up to celebrate Gopher Tortoise Day on April 10th, a statewide event dedicated to raising awareness about the vital role these reptiles play in the state’s ecosystems.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is encouraging residents to participate in various activities to recognize the gopher tortoise and the more than 350 other species that rely on their burrows for shelter.

Here are some ways to get involved:

  • Plan an Event: Organize local events on or around April 10th. The FWC’s Get Involved page offers ideas, or participants can create their own.
  • Educational Activities: Incorporate gopher tortoise-themed lessons and activities into classrooms or community programs. Educational materials are available on the FWC’s Gopher Tortoise Program Education Corner and the Florida Gopher Tortoise Day website.
  • Community Clean-ups and Planting: Organize local clean-up efforts or plant gopher tortoise-friendly vegetation in home gardens to create welcoming habitats.
  • Local Government Resolutions: Collaborate with local governments and organizations to pass resolutions recognizing Gopher Tortoise Day. Submit copies of resolutions to [email address removed] for statewide sharing.
  • Social Media Outreach: Share gopher tortoise facts and celebration activities on social media using the hashtag #GopherTortoiseDay.
