AccuWeather meteorologists are monitoring a series of winter storms that are expected to disrupt travel, create hazardous conditions, and bring dangerously cold temperatures to millions across the United States. The extreme weather will force President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday to move indoors to ensure the safety of attendees.

A quick-moving Nor’easter is expected to impact parts of the Northeast, mid-Atlantic, and Appalachians starting this weekend. The storm is forecast to bring 3–6 inches of snow to areas along the I-95 corridor, including Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.

Heavier accumulations, up to 12 inches, are likely in localized areas, including central New England and parts of West Virginia. Snowfall will begin Saturday night and continue through Sunday before tapering off.

In the South, another winter storm will form early next week, bringing rare snow and ice accumulations to Gulf Coast states. Cities like Dallas, Houston, and New Orleans are expected to see travel disruptions as far south as the I-10 corridor. With limited infrastructure to handle winter weather, these areas could face significant challenges, including icy roads and power outages.

Bitterly cold temperatures will accompany the storms, plunging much of the eastern and central U.S. into a deep freeze. AccuWeather predicts temperatures 15–25°F below average, with AccuWeather RealFeel® values dropping as low as -50°F in parts of the Midwest early next week. The cold surge will significantly increase demand for heating and electricity, putting a strain on the energy grid and potentially leading to higher energy costs.

The harsh conditions are expected to disrupt President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony, which has been moved indoors due to public health and safety concerns. Washington, D.C., is forecast to experience RealFeel® high temperatures in the teens, with single-digit RealFeel Shade™ values. AccuWeather meteorologists warn that this could be one of the coldest inaugurations on record, rivaling Ronald Reagan’s 1985 ceremony.

Residents across the affected regions are urged to take precautions as the storms approach. Travelers should prepare for flight delays and icy road conditions, especially in the Northeast and mid-Atlantic. In southern states, where infrastructure is not equipped for winter weather, residents are advised to stay off the roads during the height of the storm.

The upcoming cold snap is expected to have wide-ranging impacts, including school closures, higher energy bills, and the risk of exposed or poorly insulated pipes freezing and bursting. Residents are encouraged to conserve energy, insulate their homes, and ensure access to emergency supplies.
