Severe Weather Threat Continues: Tornadoes, Flooding, And Winter Storms To Impact US This Weekend

The United States is facing another week of relentless and hazardous weather, with severe thunderstorms, tornadoes, flooding, and winter storms all threatening different regions of the country. AccuWeather meteorologists are urging residents to stay vigilant and prepared as these dangerous conditions unfold.

A high risk of severe thunderstorms has been issued for parts of Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama on Saturday. These storms could produce tornadoes, damaging wind gusts of 70-80 mph, and flash flooding.

“The greatest risk of damaging wind gusts and tornadoes will arrive after dark, which is incredibly concerning,” said AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter. “Tornadoes and destructive storms that strike at night greatly increase the risk of injuries and loss of life since many people are sleeping.”

Porter emphasized the importance of having multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts, including the AccuWeather app, and ensuring that storm shelters or safe rooms are readily accessible.

Meanwhile, a powerful winter storm is set to impact the Midwest, Great Lakes, and Northeast, bringing snow, ice, and hazardous travel conditions to over 80 million people.

“We could see snowfall piling up at a rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour in some spots during the height of the storm,” Porter warned. “Bursts of heavy snow could create treacherous travel conditions along the path of this winter storm.”

Cities like Minneapolis, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Buffalo, and Boston are expected to receive significant snowfall, potentially causing travel disruptions and power outages.

Heavy rainfall is also a concern for the Southeast, with the potential for flash flooding in urban areas and along small streams. The combination of rain and melting snow could also lead to flooding in the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic.

Following this weekend’s storms, blasts of Arctic air will plunge much of the central and eastern U.S. into a deep freeze next week, with temperatures dropping 10-20 degrees below average.

And if that wasn’t enough, another potentially major winter storm is brewing for the middle of next week, threatening to bring significant snowfall to parts of the central and southern Plains, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Northeast.
