Today marks a year since the Supreme Court overturned Roe. v. Wade, moving the battle over abortion from Washington to the states.

Sen. Marco Rubio this week commemorated that by introducing a resolution that calls on the Senate to support families, recognize the humanity of the unborn and celebrate the lives that will be saved because of anti-abortion regulations.

In his resolution, the Florida Republican noted that the first of our “unalienable rights” outlined in the Declaration of Independence is the right to life and that modern science has greatly “illuminated” our understanding of life in the womb.

The resolution points out that the Supreme Court committed a “grave error” with the 1973 Roe decision “by inventing a constitutional right to abortion,” which thereby denied “a class of innocent people their right to life.” Since then, more than 63 million unborn lives were lost to abortion.

Yet the court rectified this error on June 24, 2022. The conservative majority declared that ‘‘the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion,’’ and that regulation of abortion “must be returned to the people and their elected representatives.’’

Florida has responded with a new law that outlaws abortion after the first six weeks of pregnancy.

Rubio, with his resolution, then urged senators to celebrate the millions of lives that will be saved as a result of this ruling; to commit to protecting the unalienable right to life and guarding unborn lives against “lethal violence”; to commit to supporting families, including new and expectant mothers and their children; and to commit to “proclaiming the humanity of the unborn, consistent with the findings of modern science and the unswerving demands of justice.”

On Friday, Rubio also penned an opinion article for Fox News commemorating the anniversary of the court’s ruling.

Since then, he wrote, “new laws in pro-life states have saved more than 60,000 babies across the country. That’s more than a statistic. Because each of those children is an incalculable gift, every measure of the value added to our nation falls short. All we can really say is that we are living through one of the greatest victories of life over death in American history.”

Rubio also called on Republican lawmakers to show the nation that “conservatives are pro-life across the board” and will “put their money where their mouths are for the sake of women and kids” by adopting more pro-life policies at the federal level.

“Left-wing activists are redoubling their efforts to take life,” Rubio noted. “And unfortunately, they are finding diabolical new ways to do so — funding abortion travel expenses through corporate health care plans, mailing dangerous abortion pills directly to women’s homes, violating federal law to perform abortions at U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs clinics and using the power of the state to smear crisis pregnancy centers.”

“These efforts are having an impact. Abortions have decreased nationally, but in some states, they have increased by close to 2,000 per month, in large part due to the new availability of telehealth abortions. It’s a terrible tragedy — and it must be countered.”
