Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is facing a significant dip in favorability among voters, according to a recent poll from The Economist/YouGov released on Wednesday. The survey revealed that only 23% of voters hold a favorable view of the New York Democrat, while a substantial 51% view him unfavorably.
This negative sentiment follows a wave of criticism Schumer received within his own party after his vote in March to advance a Republican spending bill supported by President Donald Trump. The move sparked considerable backlash from progressive Democrats, with several prominent figures publicly calling for Schumer to step down.

Among those who have urged Schumer’s resignation are Democratic Maryland Representative Glenn Ivey and Democratic Michigan State Senator Mallory McMorrow. Left-wing youth activist organizations have also joined the chorus of calls for him to resign.
The latest poll numbers represent a decline in Schumer’s approval since January. An earlier Economist/YouGov poll from January indicated that 30% of voters held a favorable view of him, while 41% viewed him unfavorably.
Adding to the challenges facing Schumer, a Data for Progress poll released on April 4 suggested that Democratic New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would lead Schumer by a significant 19 points in a hypothetical 2028 New York Senate primary matchup. NBC News reported in March that Democrats have been privately and publicly encouraging Ocasio-Cortez to challenge Schumer if he seeks reelection.

Schumer’s declining favorability comes at a time when the Democratic Party as a whole is grappling with low approval ratings and internal struggles.
A CNN poll conducted by SSRS in mid-March found the Democratic Party with a favorability rating of just 29%. Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman Ken Martin acknowledged in a February memo that there is a perception among Americans that the GOP is the “party of the working class” while Democrats are seen as the “party of the elites.”
The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted between April 13 and 15 and surveyed 1,512 U.S. adult citizens. The poll’s margin of error is 3.4 percentage points. The results highlight the growing discontent within the Democratic Party and the challenges Schumer faces in maintaining his leadership position.
