Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has shelved promotional events for his new book, Antisemitism in America: A Warning, set for release Tuesday, citing “security concerns” just days after a contentious vote on a government funding bill sparked fury within his party.

“Due to security concerns, Senator Schumer’s book events are being rescheduled,” the senator’s office wrote in a statement Monday.

The veteran lawmaker had lined up multiple stops this week to tout the book, which draws on his Jewish heritage and decades in politics to sound an alarm on rising antisemitism. But the cancellations follow a firestorm over his decision last week to help advance a Trump-backed spending measure, averting a government shutdown but drawing sharp rebukes from fellow Democrats.

Schumer, joined by nine Senate Democrats, voted Thursday to overcome a filibuster—invoking cloture—on the continuing resolution (CR), clearing the way for its passage Friday with a 62-38 margin.

While he and most of those allies flipped to “no” on the final vote, Sens. Angus King (I-ME) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) backed it all the way. Shaheen, who announced last week she won’t run again in 2026, and King were the only caucus members to fully support the bill. On the GOP side, Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) stood alone in opposing it.

The move infuriated Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), who blasted Schumer’s “tremendous mistake” in “caving” to Republicans.

House Democrats had near-unanimously rejected the CR, leaving Schumer’s Senate pivot a sore spot. Ahead of the vote, he’d warned that while “the bill is very bad,” a shutdown’s fallout—potentially amplifying Trump’s sway via his DOGE initiative—would be “much, much worse.” President Trump signed the measure Friday, officially dodging the deadline.

The backlash now shadows Schumer’s book rollout. Planned events in cities like New York, Baltimore, and Philadelphia are off, with no new dates set.

Some Democrats, already simmering over his leadership, see the timing as suspect—protests were rumored at the stops.

“He irked a lot of us,” one anonymous House Democrat told Politico, as calls for new Senate leadership bubble up.

For now, Schumer’s retreat from the spotlight leaves his book—and his party’s unity—in limbo.
