TAMPA, Fla. – A 64-year-old truck driver from New Albany, Mississippi, tragically lost his life early this morning when his tractor-trailer plunged into the Tampa Bypass Canal after colliding with a barrier wall on I-75.

The accident occurred around 2:35 AM on August 5th, near milepost 263.

The driver, whose identity has not been released, lost control of the vehicle on the rain-soaked roadway. The truck rotated, struck the barrier wall, and overturned, with the trailer hanging from the bridge and the cab separating and falling into the canal.

Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office divers located the submerged cab approximately 40 feet underwater with the driver inside.

The southbound lanes of I-75 were closed at Fowler Avenue for several hours while the scene was cleared.
