A Florida man has been arrested after a hit-and-run crash that sent a woman and her three-year-old child into a canal. The incident occurred Tuesday morning on Kanner Highway.

According to the Marton County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), the woman was driving her vehicle when a semi-truck driven by 69-year-old Alton Winters abruptly changed lanes. The truck struck the woman, forcing her car off the road and into a nearby pond.

Witnesses reported that the impact caused the car to veer off the road and into the water.

Remarkably, the woman was able to escape the sinking vehicle with her child and reach the safety of the canal bank. They were both transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Winters, instead of stopping to render aid, slowed down briefly before driving away from the scene. He later told authorities that he continued to a local produce company because he had a delivery to make.

Deputies located Winters and took him into custody. He is facing charges of leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and improper lane change.
