An avalanche struck the Palisades Tahoe ski resort in California, causing widespread concern and prompting search teams to be deployed.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. PST, an avalanche shook the Palisades Tahoe ski resort. The incident took place above the GS gully area of KT-22 on the Palisades side.

The resort immediately sprang into action, deploying its patrol and mountain operations teams to conduct a search and rescue mission.

“Mountain operations teams are performing a search at this time,” said the resort on X.

Sgt. David Smith, a spokesperson for the Placer County sheriff, told The Associated Press there are “no confirmed reports” of people trapped, but search teams are assessing the area.

The resort closed its doors to visitors and staff for the day.

Avalanches are a natural phenomenon that can occur in mountainous regions, including Lake Tahoe.

They are triggered by a combination of factors such as steep slopes, heavy snowfall, and unstable snowpack.

While resorts like Palisades Tahoe take significant precautions to mitigate the risks, avalanches can still occur unexpectedly, posing a serious threat to skiers, snowboarders, and resort staff.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
