SARASOTA, Fla. – The Sarasota Police Department will host the 2022 Law Enforcement Memorial Service on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at Light of the World Church on Chapel Drive.
The annual event is held during National Police Week, which ends May 17.
Numerous additional agencies will join the Sarasota police for the ceremonies.
The annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service recognizes men and women who serve and protect our communities and honors law enforcement officers from Florida who were killed in the line of duty the previous year. In 2021, 61 officers died in the line of duty in Florida.
Similar memorial ceremonies will happen across the state of Florida and throughout the country during May. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week.
Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week is designed to honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
