In response to Ukraine’s recent incursions into Kursk Oblast, Russia has redeployed elements of its airborne (VDV) forces from the Zaporizhia region, a move aimed at stabilizing the front lines and improving command over Russian conscripts.
According to the Institute for the Study of War, reports indicate that forces from the Russian 56th VDV Regiment, previously operating in Zaporizhia, have been moved to defend Kursk Oblast, signaling a significant shift in Russia’s military priorities.
This redeployment coincides with broader efforts by the Russian military command to bolster defenses in Kursk Oblast. Elements initially intended for the Russian offensive in northern Kharkiv have also been diverted to the region, underscoring the strategic importance of countering Ukrainian advances in the area.

The Kremlin is reportedly taking additional steps to address vulnerabilities along Russia’s border with Ukraine. Following the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk, Russian President Vladimir Putin held discussions with regional leaders from Bryansk, Kursk, and Belgorod Oblasts to assess the situation and explore enhanced support for territorial defense forces. These forces, tasked with securing Russia’s border regions, may receive increased federal funding and military equipment to strengthen their capabilities.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces have made incremental gains in Kursk Oblast, despite Russian efforts to halt their progress. Geolocated footage from August 22 confirms Ukrainian advancements near Komarovka and other areas, as Russia struggles to repel Ukrainian assaults.

Elsewhere, Ukrainian strikes have successfully targeted Russian military assets. A warehouse filled with glide bombs and fuel in Volgograd Oblast was struck by Ukrainian forces, resulting in significant damage. Ukrainian forces also hit a railway ferry carrying fuel tanks in Krasnodar Krai, further disrupting Russian logistics.
The Russian military has seen decreased aviation activity across various fronts, though it remains unclear whether this is a temporary lull or a result of Ukrainian strikes on Russian airfields.
As the conflict continues to evolve, both sides are facing mounting challenges, with the Ukrainian incursion into Kursk generating operational pressures for Russian forces across multiple regions.
