Russian forces have sustained significant losses during intensified offensive operations in September and October 2024, with reports indicating the destruction of nearly 200 tanks, over 650 armored vehicles, and an estimated 80,000 casualties.

UK Defense Secretary John Healey told The Telegraph on Saturday that UK defense intelligence data shows Russian casualty rates hit a new peak in October, averaging 1,345 troops per day—resulting in about 41,980 casualties for the month.

This follows a similarly high casualty rate in September, where the UK Ministry of Defense, citing figures from the Ukrainian General Staff, reported an average of 1,271 Russian troops lost per day, totaling approximately 38,130 casualties.

Combined, these figures suggest that Russian forces suffered around 80,110 casualties over the past two months—exceeding U.S. military losses during nearly 20 years of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Analysis by Oryx, a defense intelligence group led by Jakub Janovsky, indicates that Russian forces also lost 197 tanks, 661 armored personnel carriers (APCs), and 65 artillery systems larger than 100mm along the front lines during this period.

In exchange for these heavy losses, Russian troops managed to seize and retake a total of 1,517 square kilometers across Ukraine and Kursk Oblast—a territory less than a third the size of Delaware.

The offensive focused on areas near Kupyansk in Kharkiv Oblast and in Donetsk Oblast near Selydove, Kurakhove, and Vuhledar. While recent gains include the capture of Vuhledar and Selydove, the overall progress remains limited, with most advances occurring in sparsely populated open fields and small settlements.

Despite a slightly faster advance rate than seen in the past two years, Russian forces have yet to make any operationally significant breakthroughs, highlighting the high cost of their continued offensive efforts.
