Russia announced Sunday the capture of Novohrodivka, a town located 7 miles from the strategically important city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine. This development marks another step in Russia’s ongoing offensive to seize the entire Donbas region, which it currently controls about 80% of.
The Ukrainian military acknowledged the “tense” situation around Pokrovsk to Reuters, reporting fierce battles in the area, including around Novohrodivka.
While independent verification of these claims remains challenging, both sides paint a picture of intense fighting.

Russia’s recent gains in the east have fueled concerns among some Russian military bloggers about the army overextending itself.
