Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a temporary Easter ceasefire in Ukraine, the Kremlin announced Saturday.

According to the Associated Press, the ceasefire is set to begin at 6 p.m. Moscow time on Saturday and last until midnight following Easter Sunday.

“Guided by humanitarian considerations, today from 18:00 to 00:00 from Sunday to Monday, the Russian side declares an Easter truce. I order that all military actions be stopped for this period,” Putin said during a meeting with Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov, as quoted by the Kremlin’s Press Service.

The AP reported that Putin added, “We assume that the Ukrainian side will follow our example. At the same time, our troops must be ready to repel possible violations of the truce and provocations from the enemy, any of its aggressive actions.”

The announcement coincided with Russia’s Defense Ministry reporting that its forces had dislodged Ukrainian troops from one of their last remaining positions in Russia’s Kursk region.

The ministry stated to the AP that Russian forces had seized control of the village of Oleshnya, located on the border with Ukraine.
