In a critique of President Joe Biden’s DNC speech Monday, the Trump Campaign is accusing him of presenting misleading crime statistics amid claims that violent crime has surged during his administration.
Contrary to Biden’s assertions that violent crime is decreasing, they argue that the data he relies on is fundamentally flawed and masks a troubling reality.
Scrutiny has intensified around Biden’s claim that his administration has seen a decline in violent crime. This assertion is based on the FBI’s Quarterly Uniform Crime Report.

Let’s take a look at the numbers.
This dataset, which now only captures data from 71% of national law enforcement agencies due to significant changes in data collection methods initiated in 2021, is missing inputs from numerous key areas, including major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco.
Any logical person would argue that these omissions are critical, as they predominantly concern high-crime areas, thus skewing the overall picture.
The FBI has attempted to compensate for the lack of data from these areas with statistical estimations. Still, experts have dismissed these methods as unreliable and unscientific, particularly when such a substantial portion of data is unreported.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey offers a starkly different picture, suggesting a significant rise in violent crime nationwide. According to this survey, violent crime spiked dramatically between 2020 and 2022, with increases noted in assaults, rapes, and robberies.

Moreover, attacks on police officers have escalated, with a notable increase in both the number of officers shot and the severity of the attacks, according to the National Fraternal Order of Police. These statistics are in stark contrast to the narrative promoted by the Biden administration.
Evidence of rising crime is not limited to national surveys. Local data from major U.S. cities corroborates the upward trend in crime rates, with significant increases in homicides, carjackings, and other violent crimes since 2020. This surge is evident across diverse cities such as Washington D.C., New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Seattle.
The current crime wave is attributed in part to criminal justice reforms and a decrease in crime reporting, fueled by a broader movement against law enforcement that gained momentum in 2020. Related: Vice President Kamala Harris Faces Political Fallout Over ‘Defund The Police’ Stance
This movement has led to a reduction in police budgets, a decline in police morale, and significant officer resignations, further complicating the fight against crime.
Critics argue that Biden’s policies and rhetoric have contributed to an environment that is less safe and more challenging for law enforcement officers.
The profound disconnect between Biden’s portrayal of declining crime rates and the reality suggested by more comprehensive data sources raises serious questions about the administration’s handling of public safety and its implications for communities nationwide.
