It was a classic Biden administration moment.
Two weeks ago White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said President Joe Biden was going to do “everything he can” to help lower skyrocketing gas prices.
Literally the next day, Biden himself said he “can’t do much” about gas prices because that was Vladimir Putin’s fault.
It turns out the Republican National Committee can do something. It’s getting people registered so they can vote this fall.
According to The Hill, the RNC has “launched a voter registration initiative that will run at gas stations across the country in the upcoming weeks amid a sharp rise in fuel prices.”
The Arizona Republic reported that RNC staff and GOP volunteers spent two hours registering voters at three separate stations in Phoenix.
Ben Petersen, the communications director for Arizona’s RNC, told the Republic, “This is an issue that affects almost every single Arizonan. There’s no doubt that everyone is feeling the pain at the pump, so a gas station right now may be the very best possible place for one of our volunteers to have a conversation with someone and get someone signed up to vote.”
RNC research, Petersen added, shows that more than 80 percent of newly registered GOP voters do cast a ballot in the first election after they get registered.
“Registering someone as a Republican voter,” said Petersen, “is one of the most high-impact things we can do with our ground program.”
Meanwhile, it seems Biden has found he can do something about oil prices.
He can blame Big Oil.
“Oil prices are decreasing, gas prices should too,” Biden tweeted last week.
“Last time oil was $96 a barrel, gas was $3.62 a gallon. Now it’s $4.31. Oil and gas companies shouldn’t pad their profits at the expense of hardworking Americans.”
Never mind that it seems illogical that Big Oil wants to jack up prices excessively because people will then buy less gas.
Remember, it wasn’t so long ago – last Memorial Day – that Psaki was saying the “pandemic is in retreat,” and consequently, “Americans are eager to make up for lost time, and more people are traveling this Memorial Day weekend. … The Administration’s success in beating the pandemic and getting our economy back on track has led to increased demand for gas as the country re-opens.”
Biden should really pick a story and stick with it.
