Aloof President Joe Biden apparently doesn’t know what’s happening in his own administration, even when it’s on the news.
A recent report by the Associated Press helps explain.
Biden on Wednesday met with executives of companies that produce baby formula, which as many parents of infants know is in really short supply.
Reporting on Biden’s meeting, the AP pointed out that the execs knew the formula market was in trouble back in February after an Abbott Labs plant was shuttered.
Biden told reporters after the meeting that “he was not made aware of the severity until early April,” the AP noted.
“The delay, unexplained by Biden or White House aides, undercut the administration’s efforts to demonstrate that he has been on top of a problem that has compounded stress and economic difficulties for families with young children at a time when Americans are already struggling with inflation,” the AP added.

“White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted that the administration began working to address the crisis within days of the plant’s closure, but could not explain the delay in raising the issue to Biden.”
Biden himself demonstrated no one knew or cared enough to tell him, even though one of their favorite networks, CNN, was reporting in early February that families were “scrambling” to find formula.
In response to a reporter Wednesday, Biden said, “I don’t think anyone anticipated the impact of the shutdown of the Abbott facility.”
When the reporter reminded Biden that the CEOs themselves just told him that they knew the impact at the time of the lab shutdown, Biden replied, “They did, but I didn’t.”
Steps Biden finally did take – such as implementing the Defense Production Act to speed up formula output, and importing formula from Europe – did not happen until mid-May, three months after Biden’s FDA ordered Abbott to shut its lab.
Yet White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted the administration has been on top of the problem.
“We have been doing this whole of government approach since the recall,” she said on Wednesday. “We have been working on this for months, for months. We have been taking this incredibly seriously.”
She also shared that Biden is pleased with the FDA’s response, even though its own administrator, Commissioner Robert Califf, admitted the agency was too slow in delving into the formula shortage.
On Thursday, Jean-Pierre continued to shed doubt on claims that Biden is with it, at least on this issue.

She refused to answer multiple questions from reporters about who finally told Biden that the nation was facing a baby-formula crisis.
“Senior White House staff elevate issues to him when the time comes,” Jean-Pierre said.
When another reporter pressed the issue, she added, “The president was briefed through his regular channels as he is on countless priorities that the president of the United States has to deal with.”
But someone should ask why isn’t Biden dealing with any of them.
