Marvin Rashaad Cummings, 34, a convicted felon with a history of robbery charges, was sentenced on April 16, 2025, to 25 years in federal prison for Hobbs Act Robbery and Brandishing a Firearm in Furtherance of a Crime of Violence. Cummings had previously pleaded guilty to the charges on December 4, 2024.

According to court documents and evidence presented in court, the Raleigh Police Department (RPD) responded to a robbery at a CVS Pharmacy located on New Bern Avenue on December 29, 2022.

Eyewitness accounts detailed a black male, later identified as Cummings, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and a black mask, who approached the cashier under the guise of purchasing a pack of gum. He then brandished a black handgun, demanding all the money from the register.

The suspect proceeded to force the store clerk to lead him to the store’s safe, from which he stole a substantial amount of money that was equipped with a tracking device.

Law enforcement officials were able to track the stolen money to a red sedan parked in the vicinity of the CVS store. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers found Cummings in the driver’s seat. His clothing matched the description provided by witnesses, and he was in possession of a mask and a handgun that also matched the descriptions given to police.

During the investigation, Cummings admitted to his involvement in a total of six robberies that occurred in the Raleigh and Knightdale areas in the month preceding his arrest. He further confessed to using a real handgun in the commission of each of these crimes. Court records revealed Cummings’ extensive criminal history, which includes prior convictions for Hobbs Act robbery, conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, bank robbery, and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.

This conviction is a direct outcome of the ongoing Violent Crime Action Plan (VCAP), a collaborative initiative involving local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies working in conjunction with the community. VCAP aims to identify and address the primary drivers of violent crime through focused and strategic enforcement, interagency coordination, and intelligence-led policing strategies.
