Rep. Greg Steube’s bill to protect women’s sports from transgender ideology is making its way to a final vote.

The Sarasota Republican announced on Sunday that his bill, known as the The Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023, had recently passed the House Education and Workforce Committee with a 25-20 vote. All Republicans on the committee voted in favor.

According to Congress.gov, that was the only committee assigned to consider the bill. It’s unclear when it may come up for a vote by the full House, which Republicans narrowly control.

As The Free Press reported last month when Steube re-introduced the measure, his legislation ensures that biological females only compete against other biological females in women’s sports operated, sponsored, or facilitated by a recipient of federal funding.

Steube has said that one of his motivating factors was the treatment of Emma Weyant of Sarasota.

Last year Weyant, a U.S. Olympic swimmer, finished second in the NCAA championship for the 500-meter freestyle event behind the University of Pennsylvania’s Lia Thomas, a biological man who became a transgender woman. Thomas set numerous records after competing against biological women.

“I’m thankful to Chairwoman [Virginia] Foxx and members of the Committee on Education and the Workforce for making the safety, privacy, and opportunities of women and girls in sports a top priority for the Republican majority,” Steube said in a recent statement.

“The policies of the woke, progressive Left have invaded schools and campuses across America. Allowing biological males on women’s sports teams and in their locker rooms creates an unfair competitive environment for female athletes. Americans deserve the opportunity to see where their elected representatives stand on this incredibly important issue. I look forward to voting in favor of this legislation to save women’s sports on the House floor very soon.”

Steube’s bill has 78 co-sponsors, all Republicans.

From Florida, they include Reps. Daniel Webster, Matt Gaetz, Neal Dunn, Anna Paulina Luna, Carlos Giminez, Bill Posey, Michael Waltz, Kat Cammack and Aaron Bean.
