Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) is facing mounting backlash — and possible formal censure by Congress — after making mocking remarks about Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s disability during an LGBTQ advocacy event over the weekend.
Speaking Saturday at a Human Rights Campaign event in Los Angeles, Crockett referred to Abbott, who has used a wheelchair since a spinal injury in 1984, as “Governor Hot Wheels,” drawing laughter from some in the crowd.
“Y’all know we got Governor ‘Hot Wheels’ down there — come on now,” Crockett said. “And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot ass mess, honey.”

The comments, which quickly went viral, were widely condemned by Republicans and disability rights advocates as disrespectful and ableist.
On Tuesday, Rep. Randy Weber (R-TX) announced he plans to introduce a resolution to formally censure Crockett, calling her remarks “vile” and “disgraceful.”
“This kind of rhetoric has no place in Congress,” Weber wrote on X. “I plan to introduce a bill to censure Jasmine Crockett for her disgraceful and vile attacks against our Governor of Texas.”
It remains unclear whether the censure resolution will be considered privileged, which could force a floor vote by House Republican leadership.

Crockett, a freshman Democrat and rising progressive voice, has drawn increasing scrutiny for her combative rhetoric and language against Republican lawmakers.
In a recent podcast appearance on Sunday, she said Democrats should “punch” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) — metaphorically — describing the Texas senator as someone who “has to be knocked over the head, like hard.”
“There are no niceties with him. Like, at all. Like, you go clean off on him, right?” Crockett said.
Crockett has made no public apology for her comments about Abbott, and her office has not responded to requests for comment as of Tuesday afternoon. During the same podcast interview, she admitted that her legislative focus is centered on resisting Trump and the GOP-led Congress rather than advancing policy.
Governor Greg Abbott’s 1984 Accident: A Story of Perseverance
In July 1984, a life-altering accident drastically changed the course of Greg Abbott’s life. Then a 26-year-old recent law school graduate, Abbott was taking a break from bar exam preparations with a routine jog in a west Houston neighborhood when a large oak tree cracked and fell, crushing his back.
The impact left Abbott paralyzed from the waist down. Hospital doctors discovered crushed vertebrae splintering into his spinal cord, broken ribs, and damage to vital organs. The injuries were severe, requiring extensive surgery to piece together his vertebrae and the insertion of two steel rods near his spine, which remain there to this day.
The harrowing recovery process was marked by intense pain and a profound test of Abbott’s resilience. Abbott drew upon lessons of perseverance instilled in him throughout his life. He reportedly learned that life is not defined by its challenges, but by how one responds to them.
This experience is often cited as a defining moment in Abbott’s life, demonstrating his ability to overcome adversity. Supporters point to his recovery as evidence of his unwavering determination and strength of character.
