Many conservatives are familiar with former NCAA swimmers Riley Gaines and Paula Scanlan for their willingness to criticize the trans agenda after their encounters with Lia Thomas, the biological male from the University of Pennsylvania who competed as a woman.
Now, Rep. Greg Steube is introducing another swimmer into the debate to help promote his bill to protect women’s sports from the LGBTQ agenda.
In his weekly newsletter to constituents on Sunday, the Sarasota Republican referenced a meeting he held last week with North Carolina State University swimmer Kylee Alons.

Steube noted in a Twitter post last week that Alons is the most decorated swimmer in NC State history. Yet at the 2022 NCAA Championships, she opted to change in a storage closet instead of in an open locker room because Thomas was present.
In his tweet, Steube noted Alons did so “rather than experience the sexual harassment that comes with undressing in front of Will ‘Lia’ Thomas – a biological male who insisted on being in the female locker room.”
As Fox News recounted the meeting, Alons ended her career at NC State as a two-time national champion — in the 2021 400 medley relay and the 200 medley relay — as well as a 31-time All-American and five-time ACC champion.
In response to Stebue’s tweet about the meeting, Gaines replied about Alons, “She & her teammates changed in a JANITORS (sic) CLOSET because it felt safer than changing in a locker room where an intact male would simultaneously be undressing. Ive (sic) looked up to Kylee for a long time given how fast she is, but even more so now she’s speaking out #SaveWomensSports.”

Which is what Steube seeks to do.
As The Free Press reported in April, his bill, the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2023, passed by a 219-203 margin. Every opposing vote came from a Democrat.
The bill states that schools receiving federal funding must block men who identify as women from competing in women’s sports.
After his meeting with Alons, Steube tweeted, “The Senate must vote on this critical bill to save women’s sports and protect female athletes like Kylee from sexual harassment in the locker room.”
The American public is overwhelmingly with Steube on this issue, according to a recent poll.
In May, Gallup released a poll that found 69% of respondents believe trans athletes should compete on sports teams that align with their birth sex.
