U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz seeks to “disarm” the IRS – literally.
In an email to constituents on Friday, the Fort Walton Beach Republican announced that he had filed the ‘‘Disarm the IRS Act.’’
In stark contrast to most federal legislation, which often runs hundreds or thousands of pages that few lawmakers ever read, Gaetz’s bill is one sentence:
“Notwithstanding any other provision of law, the Internal Revenue Service may not acquire (by purchase or otherwise) any ammunition after the date of the enactment of this Act.”
Gaetz’s measure is in response to recent reports that the IRS is stockpiling ammo.
As The Free Press reported last month, the federal government’s tax enforcers had bought $700,000 of ammunition just between Mach 1 and June 1. The reason is unclear.
At the time, Gaetz noted, “The IRS should be people in cubicles with green [eye] shades and calculators. They shouldn’t be people with guns and ammo.”

Gaetz suggested the Biden administration may be trying to acquire more ammo to keep it out of the hands of lawful gun owners.
In his email, Gaetz said co-sponsors of his bill include GOP Reps. Jeff Duncan of SOuth Carolina, Paul Gosar of Arizona, and Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia.
Gaetz noted that he wanted to raise his concerns “about this outrageous use of taxpayer dollars,” and that his goal is to “prohibit the IRS from arming themselves with your money ever again.”
“As the United States can barely finance the interest payments on its current debt,” he added, “it is imperative that we stand up to irresponsible spending measures, whether it’s thousands or trillions.”
