Rep. Matt Gaetz praised new House Speaker Mike Johnson for supporting subpoenas being issued to President Joe Biden’s son and brother this week, and used the occasion to take another shot at former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
“Finally, Hunter Biden got a damn subpoena,” Gaetz said on his “Firebrand” podcast on Wednesday.
The Fort Walton Beach Republican was reacting to news that House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer issued subpoenas for depositions to Hunter Biden, President Biden’s brother James, and Rob Walker, a Biden family associate.

In a press release, Comer said the Biden family created more than 20 shell companies, most of which were established when Joe Biden served as vice president, in order to hide payments from foreign adversaries. The Biden family, their associates, and their companies raked in more $24 million from foreign nationals from China, Russia, Ukraine, Romania, and Kazakhstan. The Bidens and their associates made complicated financial transactions to conceal the source and total amount of money they received from foreign nationals and companies.
As evidence of the Bidens’ scheme, House Republicans recently uncovered checks worth $240,000 issued directly to Joe Biden by James.
“When we had the California lottery winner instead of a constitutional lawyer in the speaker’s office, we weren’t exactly seeing the subpoenas fly in a way that demonstrated sincerity and rigor to a real investigation,” Gaetz said.
“But now with Mike Johnson in the speaker’s office, we get the news … (of an) escalation of the Republicans’ impeachment inquiry into the president.”

“It is about time. We fully applaud this decision to send subpoenas to Hunter and James Biden,” said Gaetz. “We’re glad to see it.”
“This is a process that, frankly, Kevin McCarthy had blocked for quite some time,” he added. “We’re behind as a consequence of Kevin McCarthy’s poor leadership. But now we’re doing what we need to do to get on track.”
“We will be all over that to ensure we get accountability over the Biden crime family.”
Gaetz was so frustrated by McCarthy’s inaction on pursuing the Bidens that, as the Tampa Free Press has reported, he issued his own draft subpoena for Hunter in September and challenged McCarthy to issue it.
“@SpeakerMcCarthy, after eight months of inaction, I have taken the liberty of drafting a subpoena to Hunter Biden. It simply requires your date and signature. Millions of Americans are wondering if you’re serious,” Gaetz posted on X (formerly Twitter) at the time.
