Last week, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) offered her latest stunt in a short political career filled with asinine moves, gestures, and statements.
At a pro-abortion demonstration at the U.S. Supreme Court, she was “arrested” for civil disobedience and given a $50 fine. At the scene, a U.S. Capitol Police officer led her away, and as she strolled along, the smirk-bearing AOC walked with her hands behind her back as if she was handcuffed. Yet at one point, she thrust a fist in the air to her supporters, revealing her posture was all a ruse.
Still, and despite readily available video evidence she faked it, AOC had the audacity in a social media post to claim critics’ noting she had faked the arrest was a Republican conspiracy theory.
But after AOC’s showboating incident, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, in being asked about AOC’s fake handcuffs, noted AOC’s performative display only highlighted the double standard applied in Washington – one that punishes Republicans as Democrats skate.
In an interview with Jesse Watters of Fox News, Gaetz joked that AOC’s “arrest” was “awe-inspiring.”
But, he added, “I honestly can’t believe we live in a country where AOC gets fake handcuffs put on her before Hillary Clinton gets real handcuffs put on her.”

Gaetz was likely referring to the fact that Clinton’s campaign in 2016 paid a former British spy to create a phony dossier about alleged collusion between former President Donald Trump and Russian operatives that led the FBI and the intelligence agencies to work to undermine Trump throughout his presidency.
The Fort Walton Beach Republican then noted that Washington is “built on fake things.”
Besides AOC’s handcuffs, he said, President Joe Biden has a “fake Oval Office” in a building next to the White House, which at this point he may not even know is fake, and “we have the fake Jan. 6 committee.”
Gaetz pointed out that at the abortion rally left-wing Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar also faked wearing cuffs, yet former Trump advisers face real treatment from the justice system – such as Steve Bannon being put on trial for contempt of Congress and Peter Navarro being leg-shackled after being arrested for charges similar to those leveled against Bannon
“Where’s all this white privilege I keep hearing about?” he told Watters.
Watters also asked whether House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ought to be fitted with a set of iron bracelets for alleged insider-trading. Recent news reports noted Pelosi’s husband, who recently faced a drunk-driving arrest, bought $5 million in stock of a computer-chip manufacturer just before Congress was set to vote on a big subsidy package for U.S. chip-makers.
“Increasingly our fellow Americans are worried about the double standard we see on display,” said Gaetz.
As an example, he referenced Trump supporters arrested during the Jan. 6 riot even though they entered the Capitol – as AOC herself said recently – through gates and doors opened by police.

In an email to constituents on Friday, Gaetz again noted the double standard as applied to Clinton.
“These days,” he said, “we are more focused on AOC’s silly public stunt than on how Hillary Clinton has continued to skirt justice for so many years after being caught red-handed committing egregious crimes.”
