Red tide continues to be a concern in Southwest Florida, with the harmful algae Karenia brevis detected in numerous water samples over the past week. While Northwest and East Coast Florida remain clear of red tide for now, Southwest Florida is experiencing varying levels of bloom concentrations.

Key findings:

  • 74 samples positive for red tide: K. brevis was found in 74 samples collected from Southwest Florida.
  • Bloom concentrations in 11 samples: High concentrations of red tide were observed in samples from Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee counties.
  • Satellite imagery shows widespread patches: Elevated chlorophyll levels, which can indicate red tide blooms, were detected in patches along and offshore of Northwest and Southwest Florida.
  • Ongoing monitoring: Researchers are conducting coastal and offshore sampling to monitor the extent of the red tide.
  • Fish kills and respiratory irritation reported: Fish kills potentially linked to red tide were reported in several counties, and respiratory irritation was reported in Sarasota County.

County-specific observations:

  • Southwest Florida: Red tide was observed at varying concentrations in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Manatee, Sarasota, Charlotte, and Lee counties.
  • Northwest Florida: No red tide was observed.
  • East Coast Florida: No red tide was observed.

Recommendations:

  • Stay informed: Check the latest red tide updates and forecasts from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
  • Report fish kills and respiratory irritation: If you experience respiratory irritation or observe fish kills, report them to the FWC Fish Kill Hotline or other appropriate authorities.
  • Follow safety guidelines: Avoid swimming or engaging in water activities in areas with visible red tide blooms. If you experience respiratory irritation, move away from the area or go indoors.

Red tide is a naturally occurring phenomenon in Florida, but blooms can have significant impacts on marine life, human health, and local economies. Staying informed and following safety guidelines are crucial during red tide events.
