ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Rays outfielder Josh Lowe, having a career season, is playing against his brother Nathaniel in this AL Wildcard Series vs. the Rangers, but he’s also playing for his Mom who’s battling cancer.
“I called my Mom today and asked her If I could let you guys know about this,” Lowe said. “My mom is actually battling cancer. She’s going through chemo right now. She won’t be able to make it. I asked her if it was okay if I said something and she said yes because the more people that know, the more prayers that can be for her.”
Josh is having a career season batting .292 with 20 home runs, 32 stolen bases, and 83 RBIs.

Josh is the younger brother of Texas Rangers 1st baseman Nathaniel Lowe and was hoping his Mom Wendy would be able to make this Wildcard Series. Since she’s undergoing chemotreatment, it isn’t possible.
The Lowe brothers were in the Rays system together, but never played on the Major League Club at the same time.
Texas picked up Nathaniel, who was known simply as Nate when he was with the Rays in a trade in December of 2020.
The Lowe brothers did play on the same major league field this past June when the Rays hosted the Rangers.
Rays skipper Kevin Cash says it’s one thing to have the season Lowe is having, it’s another to deal with his Mom’s journey to try and beat cancer.
“We talk about the season that Josh has put together here and you’re right, with all that stuff on his mind back home, it’s that much more impressive, ” Cash said. That entire Lowe family is very impressive to Josh, to Nathaniel, Mom, Dad everybody. This is got to be pretty special for them. I’m glad it’s happening.”
Lowe doesn’t know if he’d have been as successful anywhere else with the tremendous support he’s had from his Rays teammates and coaching staff.
“This team has been everything to me,” Lowe said. “The front office, Cashy (Kevin Cash) , the coaching staff, I obviously haven’t shared it. But they’ve been here for me every single minute that I need. I can’t say enough good things about them.”
Josh told his Mom there would be plenty of other opportunities to see the Lowe brothers play and said there would be some other family members on hand to watch this series at Tropicana Field.
